Trion and Raptr recently held a developer Q&A session for Rift. I jumped in with my dimensions questions and Trion were kind enough to reply. Highlights of the session: new dimensions coming soon (cross our fingers for the patch 2.1) and Trion are looking at the issue of dimension walls.
Q1. I see dimensions as a game within a game and a viable endgame for players who can’t participate in the traditional endgame. I often think Trion views it as a platinum sink. How does Trion view the place of dimensions in their game?
A. We’ve always thought of Dimensions as a fantastic way for players to show off their accomplishments and creativity. The plat required was intended to create a natural progression for players to move up through bigger and bigger spaces. We’ve listened to player feedback, however, and realized that the original plat costs were a bit aggressive and stifling creativity. As you’ve now seen, we recently reduced Dimension prices across the board to address this.
We are also going to continue adding new Dimension spaces, and we’ve got some less expensive ones targeted for the next batch.
Dimensions as they are now are a foundation. Going forward we are looking to expand the item selection for players and also give new reasons for players to want to visit dimensions. Dimensions are all about making and sharing the awesome creative potential our player base has.
Q2. As the number of dimensions on a shard grows, re-finding a dimension I like grows harder. Any hope of being able to bookmark our favorite dimensions?
A. It’s been discussed, but we have no concrete plans for this at the moment. For now, adding that player to your friends list is a good way to track them. We have a long list of player feedback that we are going through, and this is on the list =)
Q3. There are lots of requests for an increase in item levels for a dimension or for the number of dimensions a character can have. What is Trion’s stance on this? Are there technical limitations to the item levels in dimensions and if so what are they?
A. There are definitely some limitations when you are talking about players each having their own instance with hundreds of items. That being said, we are gathering good data about how they are being used and recently just bumped up item limits across the board!
Again, this was thanks to good, constructive player feedback. With such a freeform system, we weren’t entirely sure how people were going to use the spaces. Now that we’ve got a better idea about that, we are adjusting to what players want.
Q4. I’ve seen a few dimensions around related to sexual activity and, since I make people for my dimension, I’ve been tempted to put a man and lady stick figure together in naughty poses. What is Trion’s stance on sexually explicit dimensions? Put a NC-17 rating on it or OMG – ban hammer?
A. We want players to be creative and have fun with their spaces. Use good judgment. Our CS team is the best in the business and will handle issues on a case by case basis. Basically, don’t be harmful to others, don’t be a jerk.
Q5. The shimmering dimension wall can block the views in some dimensions, I’m thinking Plaza Aurentine here, any plans to make it less intrusive?
A. We were just talking about this with our design and art team. The walls are important for showing the bounds of each dimension…we’ll look into a way to tone them down, especially in locations like Plaza Aurentine.
Q6. On Greybriar, one person completely copied another’s dimension design down to the last detail? Can the original creator seek redress from Trion for such a blatant theft of intellectual property?
A. Copying is sometimes the greatest form of flattery while we’d hope players would give credit where credit is due, one of the great parts about dimensions is you can build what you see in others in your own. Now it crosses into CS’s territory if you’re doing it AND harassing a player about it – so again, see Question 4 🙂
Q7. Fae Yule – your favorite holiday?
A. I think I personally (Elrar here) love Carnival of the Ascended the most….but with Sledding & Dimension items in Fae Yule now, it’s a tough choice!!
Q8. Have you read Better Homes and Dimensions at https://thestylishradish.wordpress.com? OK, this last question is a shameless plug and doesn’t need to be answered 🙂
A. I hadn’t but thanks for sharing – I have now!
Thank you, Trion Developers, for the excellent work you’ve been putting in.
You’re welcome and thanks for playing – have a wonderful weekend 🙂
The most interesting part is the statement that Trion views the current dimension system as a foundation and plan to implement new reasons for players to return to dimensions. My mind boggles with the possibilities. The full question and answer session can be found here.
